Natural, Straight, God's Hair's Great

Even though my focus is mainly people of color in America, because I can only speak from experience, I see women all over the world experience the same ignorance.

The 15-minute vlog below is titled "Diary of a Frustrated Haitian: What's Wrong With Natural Hair"?  She knows there is nothing wrong, she is just saying why has it become wrong?  We had our hair hidden when we came to America and we are taking our hair out of our red Mammy handkerchiefs!

She speaks how she wears natural and then one day straightened her hair for a day and everyone went crazy over how great she looked and wondered why?  I had the same experience, but those who know me say they don't like my hair straight because they know how my personality is hyper-like and straight is confining and my natural is me.  Straight is good - but natural is better.

The black women natural hair.  I always loved curly hair and hated the days my mom had to use the hot comb to straighten my hair.  Why was she doing this, I wondered as a child - a very tender-headed one.  She said, "You don't think your hair come out like this do you?" I did.

Why do we do it?  To look like our ancestor's or to look like some other kind.  Why do we all want to have European features and get ostracized for not appearing so?

Who says European is the standard of beauty.  In other words, you tell every race that if they don't have their features it is not seen as beautiful - in their eyes.  I say that is full of horse dung.  I never heard God tell me that I was ever ugly, and I never been called ugly in my life.  I have been thought of as inferior or whatever because I choose natural.  That is a problem that others are going to have to face even in the black society.

Black hair.  There is nothing like it on earth.  My black hair is not a mistake.  Just like your straight hair is not a mistake.  Many more black women are choosing to go natural, even if they wear a wig or weave over it.  Give it time, black women of America will finally see the value of what God placed on their head.  The root has a deep curl which is connected to the earth's root.

I learned to love it instead of fighting it.  Those who ask to do otherwise have an issue within them that they can not accept people that are different period.  It is no longer my issue either.  I have matured and I am too tired to let other people's ideas of perfection make me feel lower than I am.

Peace my sisters,
Denise Morris
